As such, that’s what I’ve tried to do here. What it’s meant to be is a You Should Play This that details parts of the game and why they stood out to me (and sometimes why they didn’t work). I know this may all have seemed a bit wishy-washy but remember this isn’t meant to be a Game Review, per-se. A personal favourite of mine were the sneakers, which aren’t required for any quest from what I could tell, but they do allow you to ZOOM around areas and I enjoyed that. Many of these are purely aesthetic, but a few are required to complete quests and allow for traversal of the more treacherous areas in the game. Stinky.Īlongside a compendium to fill up, there’s also cosmetics to unlock.

Each unique entry is listed by location and is easy enough to track, but it was certainly satisfying to fill up, nonetheless. Not only will this appeal to the photography-aficionados out there, but there’s also an in-game compendium for you to fill up.

Fear not, you’ll know which these are.Īs you progress through TOEM you’re also free to snap pictures of anything and everything you want.

The majority of tasks can be completed before you leave for the next area, but a few will require you to return later. You’ll also unlock an attachment that allows you to perform a honk action that is handy in certain situations, and a tripod that lets you position the camera and take photos whilst you are elsewhere (I won’t spoil how, but this is again handy for completing tasks). For example, a worker at a power plant needs you to use the zoom function to identify problems inside a generator, whilst a lighthouse worker needs you to use it to identify marooned ships. Some fall under the ‘fetch quest’ banner, whilst others utilise the camera in more ways than just snapping photographs. These aren’t the only types of quest either. I know that may not have been the most clear-cut of explanations, but don’t worry about it too much, nothing is mind-bendingly tough- I have faith in you. You have to locate what they want you to snap and take the picture to them, sometimes locating these items is the puzzle, whereas sometimes it’s the description. For example, there are several NPC’s throughout each area that offer you photo challenges. Where the puzzle aspect comes in is that the description of these quest can sometimes be quite vague. In each location, save for the initial and final area (there’s a wooded area, a seaside port, a city, a mountain) you’ll come across various NPC’s who’ll have a task for you, which typically involves the use of your camera. Fish?Īnyhow, the way these ‘puzzles’ work are essentially as follows. I mean, really the fire burns the house down, but I didn’t make the saying. And I wouldn’t say that lightly, as I’ve made it clear in the past that me and puzzle games don’t always get on like a house on fire. Sound simple? Well, for the most part it is. The soundtrack is also suited to whichever area you find yourself in (more on that shortly) and I want to give a more profound description, but I simply found the game to be utterly charming- I don’t know how else to say it.Īs for what you’ll be doing, it’s your task to travel to each new location in the game and complete short quests to unlock enough stamps to allow you to take a bus ride to the next location. That’s the best way I can describe it.Īs I mentioned, the black and white aesthetic and art style of the game (the only colour comes when you see the TOEM) seemed to be handrawn and I was a big fan of that. Well, you ultimately photograph it from the top of a mountain. For those interested, the TOEM is sort of like a Northern Lights- esque structure found atop a mountain. It’s time to stretch those creaking bones and get out of bed though because sweet, old granny wants to give you a camera so that you can set off on your adventure to snap a picture of the mythical TOEM. From the offset the visual style of the game and the soundtrack had me smiling to myself. The game starts with you awakening in your humble abode. Though both of those genres can vary in how they play out, so I’ll just do my best to explain things as I go. I’m not an expert, but if I had to name the genre of game that TOEM is, I’d say it’s an adventure-puzzle game.

It’s a delightful game that I was quickly enamoured by, so let’s not beat around the bush and just get straight into the You Should Play This.
